Balloons & Granite

Balloons & Granite is a series of durational dance installations that investigate themes of persistence in socio-political and environmental contexts. Each installation is different in appearance and tone, a dancer working with either a mass of either white balloons or white granite fragments. Choreographically I'm interested in the opposing weight of the two materials and what meanings we draw from placing the body at the center. How to actions and images degrade over time? What is revealed in both the shifting of the landscape and the persistence and fatigue of the performer?

The next stage of this project will see me work with two Australian and two international artists in the collaborative exploration of the body in shifting landscapes and how this translates across culture, resulting in new performance installations.

Balloons and Granite is being developed in partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse and supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. The concept was seeded at Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art by Performance Space, Sydney 2016 with dancers from The Stance (Liveworks).
